How to Set Up Instagram Comment-to-DM Automation in 5 Minutes (2026)

Here's a small moment that happens on Instagram a thousand times a day. You post a Reel about a product, a class, a service. Someone watches it, likes it, and comments a single word: price? And then nothing happens, because you're asleep, or driving, or filming the next Reel. By the time you reply, they've scrolled on and forgotten you existed.

Comment-to-DM automation closes that gap. Someone comments your keyword, and within seconds they get a direct message from you with the link, the price, the booking form, whatever you set up. Automatically. All day.

This guide walks you through setting it up from scratch. No code, nothing technical, about five minutes start to finish. I'll use SlideReply for the steps because that's what I know inside out, but the shape of the process is the same on any tool built the right way.

Before you start: the one requirement that trips people up

You need an Instagram Business or Creator account. Not a personal one.

This isn't a hoop invented by automation tools. It's Instagram's own rule. Only professional accounts can connect to the official messaging API, which is the safe, approved way to send automated DMs. If you're on a personal account, switching is free and takes about thirty seconds: go to your profile, tap the menu, Settings and privacy, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. Pick Creator if you're an individual, Business if you're a brand or shop. That's it. Your username, followers, and posts all stay exactly the same.

If you skip this step, every tool will just refuse to connect, and you'll waste ten minutes wondering why. So do it first.

Step 1: Connect your Instagram account

Sign up for your tool of choice and look for the Connect Instagram button. When you tap it, you'll be sent to Instagram's own login screen, the real one, on instagram.com.

Pay attention here, because this is where safe and unsafe tools split. A safe tool never asks you to type your Instagram password into its website. It sends you to Instagram, you approve the connection there, and Instagram hands the tool a limited permission it can use, and that you can revoke any time from your settings. If a tool ever asks for your actual password directly, close the tab. That's the old, risky kind of automation that gets accounts restricted.

With SlideReply you sign up with email (or Google), tap Connect, approve on Instagram's screen, and you're back on the dashboard with your account linked. On the free plan you don't even need a card to do this.

Step 2: Pick the post and the keyword

Now choose what triggers the DM.

First, the post or Reel. You can point an automation at a specific post ("everyone who comments on this Reel gets the DM") or set it up for new posts going forward. For your first one, pick a post that already gets comments asking questions. You want to see it work on real traffic.

Then, the keyword. This is the word people comment to get your DM. The best keywords are:

  • Short and easy to spell. LINK, PRICE, GUIDE, BOOK. If people have to think about how to spell it, they won't.
  • Obvious from your caption. You'll literally tell people what to comment ("Comment PLAN and I'll send you the details"), so the word just needs to be clean and memorable.
  • All caps in your caption, case-insensitive in the tool. Writing it in caps in your caption makes it pop. Good tools match it no matter how the commenter types it, PLAN, plan, or Plan.

One keyword per intent is plenty to start. You can add more later.

Step 3: Write the DM (and make it not sound like a robot)

This is the part that actually decides whether you get a customer or a "seen and ignored."

Keep the first message short, human, and useful. Lead with the thing they asked for, don't bury the link under three lines of hello-how-are-you. A simple structure that works:

Hey! Here's the link you asked for 👉 [your link] Anything else you want to know? Just reply here.

Two small touches make a big difference:

Use a personalization tag. Most good tools let you drop the commenter's name or handle into the message, something like {{name}}. "Hey Priya, here's that link" reads warmer than a form letter, and it makes every message slightly different, which is also safer (more on that below).

Add spinnable variations. SlideReply supports what's called spintax, where you write {Hey|Hi|Hello} and each DM randomly picks one. It sounds like a small thing, but when 500 people comment on a Reel that took off, you do not want 500 identical messages going out. Identical bursts are exactly what Instagram's spam filters look for. Variations keep it looking like a busy human, not a machine.

Step 4: Turn on the extras that make it work harder

Before you hit activate, most tools give you a few optional toggles. The ones worth using:

  • Public reply. Right after the DM sends, the tool can also post a public comment reply like "Sent! Check your DMs 💬". This does two jobs: it tells the commenter to actually go look, and it shows everyone else scrolling the comments that you respond, which pulls more people into commenting.
  • Follow gate. This asks the commenter to follow you before they get the link. It turns one comment into a follower and a lead. It's optional and worth a whole article of its own, but know that the toggle is there.
  • Follow-up message. If they reply, you can auto-send a second message, an offer, a question, a booking link, so a warm lead doesn't go cold. (On SlideReply, follow-ups are a paid-plan feature; the opening DM works on the free plan.)

Don't turn on everything at once for your first automation. Get the basic comment → DM working, then layer on extras.

Step 5: Test it, then activate

Never trust an automation you haven't tested. Once it's set up, go to your post from a different account (or ask a friend) and comment the keyword. Within a few seconds the DM should land. Check that the link works and the message reads the way you want.

If it fires correctly, you're done. Activate it and go post the caption that tells people what to comment.

That's the whole thing. Connect, pick a keyword, write the DM, test, activate. Five minutes, and now every "price?" comment gets answered whether you're online or not.

The mistakes that quietly kill results

Setting it up is easy. These are the things that make the difference between "neat, it works" and "this actually made me money":

  1. You forgot to tell people what to comment. The automation is invisible until your caption says "Comment GUIDE for the free checklist." The call to action in the caption is the funnel. No prompt, no comments, no DMs.
  2. Your keyword is buried or clever. "Comment 'I'm-ready-to-transform' " is a keyword nobody will type correctly. Keep it to one clean word.
  3. The DM asks for too much, too fast. The first message should give value, not demand a purchase. Send the link or the answer first. Sell on the follow-up.
  4. No pacing. If your tool blasts all DMs instantly with identical text, you're risking your account on your best-performing post. A good tool paces sends and warms up new accounts automatically. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay to set this up? No. You can run comment-to-DM on SlideReply's free plan, which includes a monthly batch of DMs and needs no credit card. Paid plans add higher limits and follow-up messages.

Can I use it on Reels and Stories, not just photo posts? Yes. Comment-to-DM works on posts, Reels, and (on some plans) live videos. Story replies are a related but separate trigger.

How fast does the DM arrive? Usually within a few seconds, though good tools add a small, deliberate delay and pace sends during a spike to keep your account safe. Fast, but not robot-instant.

Will the commenter know it's automated? If your message is personalized and slightly varied, most won't think twice, it just looks like you replied quickly. Identical, generic blasts are what give automation away.

How many keywords or automations can I run? On SlideReply you can run multiple keyword automations across your posts, even on the free plan. Start with one, then expand as you see what your audience responds to.

Ready to try it

If you want to set your first one up right now, create a free SlideReply account, connect your Instagram, and you can have a working comment-to-DM automation live before your next post goes out. The free plan is genuinely free, so there's no reason not to test it on your next Reel and watch the DMs start landing on their own.
